Greenwashing Self Prompt

Prompt: What is greenwashing? What is sustainability and how does it impact us as consumers? How does sustainability contribute to our self-identity?

Greenwashing is buying or doing something marketed as “green” to offset other products or habits that are not as environmentally friendly. Sustainability is defined as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Brassington & Pettit, 2005, p.12, as cited by (Schielke & Altobelli, 2012). So, people buy things labeled as “green” in order to create a more sustainable lifestyle for them and the future generations. However, the bad news is that almost every product that is bought has at least some impact on the environment. To give an example, almost everything in a store is packaged in some way, and many of these ways negatively impact the environment, most of the packaging isn’t decomposable. This idea of sustainability contributes to our self-identity due to perceived moral obligation. Moral obligation is what we think we should do and self-identity is how we view or want to view ourselves. Consumers feel a moral obligation to help provide a sustainable environment for future generations. This helps consumers improve their self-identity. Yet again, almost every single product does negatively impact the environment in some way, leading to the question “is our current lifestyle sustainable?”

Greenwashing Prompt and Response

Prompt: In your own words, define what greenwashing means. Thinking back, have you ever purchased something you believed was helping the environment that you later found out was not? Explain what you think would be a better alternative to this item that could actually help the environment.

Answer: Greenwashing is a term that is used when a company promotes green living, or environmentally friendly products and practices however, does not actually help the environment in any way (Staff, 2007). This is something I was not aware of until this quarter where I briefly learned about it in another class. Ethically speaking, this is so wrong. In my opinion, companies should be true to what they preach and produce. I do not think it is fair to lie to consumers and customers about anything regarding the company. It is concerning that greenwashing is allowed, or that any dishonesty is legal.

I am, or was, a huge supporter of Simple Green products. My mom has bought them for awhile and I starter to purchase them to clean my own home once I moved out. Come to find out, Simple Green is simply not green or environmentally friendly as they claim. The company states their products are “non-toxic” and “biodegradable” however, they are full of toxic chemicals harmful to not only the earth but humans as well (Michael, 2015). One of the ingredients used irritates eyes and damages red blood cells if absorbed through the skin, which is easy to do when cleaning with your hands (Michael, 2015). The ingredients are not specific in the colors use in this product, which is why it scores an F on EWG’s website (Simple Green, 2017). It has also been noted that certain components of the products may lead to cancer (Simple Green, 2017). With all of this knowledge I am now aware of, I will not be purchasing these products any longer.

Illness and Mortality Prompt 1

https://www.dshs.wa.gov/altsa

After looking through the Washington state’s website on aging and long term services, what I immediately found helpful was the “Getting Started” page. They have information on what type of care is needed, such as physical, transportation, house care, or with staying social and active in the community. I found this important and useful because I didn’t think about what type of care an adult would need. This website also showed information for in-home services for those who want to stay in their own home. It also has information long-term care housing for adults who might need supervised nursing care, or want to be in a community with other adults to stay social and active. Something I am curious to know is the costs of the different types of services. I would talk to providers to get to know what they offer, and also visit different facilities that offer the type of care my loved one needed to see if they would be happy there.

Early Life Matters Prompt 1

So I read about childbirth, C-section, and preconception care. I think that new parents to be are very vulnerable to all the things in the market because most of them are not aware of what they actually need. They’re vulnerable because they are new to parenting; they might encounter something that they might not need or actually harmful for them and they’re not aware of the harm. What I really found interesting was this web called Preconception Health and Health Care. What this mainly talked about was how new parents can take care of themselves in order to prevent problems with new babies being born.

I think that most pre-parents and young parents would really like to know in order to make the best choices possible for themselves and their new babies is that they have to take care of themselves. They should make this a priority. Many parents to be are not aware of the things they might be doing that will be harmful for their babies. Some might think that it’s okay to do drugs because it won’t really affect their babies but that’s not true at all. Because what parents do, it also affect the unborn child very much. For instance, eating too little or too much or drug abuse will affect the baby. Also, pregnant women should watch out what they eat because what they eat might have some bad ingredients. Always take time to look at the food label and understand what you’re putting into your body. What they should know for sure is that their every action has an impact on the child. Just because the child is not physically in this world doesn’t mean the things they do does not affect it.
